What
is new in Brazil:
1)
The first sea reservation for whales in Brazil was
created in September. From now on fishing along the Coast
of Santa Catarina state is severely restricted. Whales are
coming to this coastal strip from the Antarctica in order
to procreate in the warmer waters. The first camera crew that
was chasing whales with a motor boat has already been stopped
by Brazil's military police; officials from IBAMA (Brazilian
Institute for the protection of the Environment) will also
be on guard. (Journal do Brasil, Sep. 16th, 2000) In the future,
the state of Santa Catarina and we at Universal Understanding™
hope to develop a non-disturbing, environmentally correct
way to show these magnificent mammals to the nature-loving
traveler.
2)
New study results in new construction rules and regulations.
Instead of sanitizing the beaches using chemicals, Rio de
Janeiro now lets the Sun do the job. A new study found that
sunlight is the most effective agent when it comes to killing
germs in the sand. Therefore, has Rio passed legislation that
does not allow new buildings to shade the beach between 7
am in the morning and 5 pm in the evening. The first victims
of this law are new apart-hotels that were supposed to be
built on a former camping site. (Journal do Brasil, Sep. 7th,
